Defense goes renewable: The adoption of renewable energy by the military
Often the most significant technological advances in our society begin with the military-industrial complex. With renewable energy it is happening with the US Pentagon, The US military depends upon the US electrical grid for it to operate. If the electrical grid goes down the military is made dysfunctional. In late 2015 and 2016, Russian hackers shut down much of the Ukrainian power grid. In March of this year, Russian hackers penetrated the computers of multiple US electrical utilities. Without access to secure electrical power plants the most advanced military in the world would be crippled. This is obviously not acceptable. A recent 500 page study by the US Energy Department warns that it is only a matter of time before the US electrical grid is threatened. American security depends upon the US Military getting off the US electrical grid and that means renewable resources like solar, wind, tidal, geothermal ,etc., and storage batteries, lots of them. These batteries will enable each US Military base( there are 900 of them worldwide) to set up its own unique electrical grid to service the base with its electrical needs. Each military base will be self sufficient when it comes to power. Again, this makes the case to develop Atacama's cobalt/graphite properties as these are two of the critical materials when it comes to manufacturing electric storage batteries.
