Minerals & locations

‘Mining Explorations’ is a work in progress.  Atacama has six minerals of interest.  They are gold, diamonds, cobalt, graphite, nickel, and lithium. There is a section on each mineral that includes a picture and a short discussion of each mineral. In addition, there is a click-through for each section that will provide more information about the mineral and a place to present a map of owned mining claims.  Information will be added to Mining Explorations regularly to keep the information up to date.

LITHIUM

Lithium is needed in the production of all-electric vehicles-trucks, cars, ships, buses, bikes, etc. as well as a host of other electronic uses such as electric tools, air conditioners, military technologies, medicines, nuclear reactors, cameras, laptops, mobile phones, etc.  By 2030 it is expected that batteries will account for 95% of all lithium demand and grow by nearly 25% annually to meet the growing global demand. Presently, there is only one lithium-producing mine in North America, the Silver Peak Mine in Nevada. The properties being reviewed by Atacama are located in Nevada and could capitalize on the new lithium production facility being built in Nevada. The growing demand-supply gap in the electricity sector has led to an increase in demand for lithium-ion batteries. The ability to store a considerable amount of power and be used to supply this stored power in the grid makes the demand for lithium grow considerably in the next several years.  The globally increased demand for electric automobiles, SUV’s and trucks will increase the requirement for lithium to grow exponentially in the foreseeable future.  Elon Musk has indicated that a crisis of supply might hit the EV industry in the years ahead.

Cobalt

Long valued for its corrosion and wear-resistant properties, cobalt has been used in special alloys like those used in aircraft engines. It is an essential element used in electroplating and for imparting blue and green colors to glass and ceramic products. Radioactive 60co is used in cancer treatment. We expect a major increase in demand for cobalt as the worldwide electric vehicle battery and energy storage businesses expand.

NICKEL

Nickel is a metal whose workability and mechanical strength at high temperatures and in corrosive environments make it an indispensable alloying element for the development of stainless steel, specialty steel, super-alloys, rechargeable batteries and electroplating. Its outstanding physical and chemical properties make nickel essential in hundreds of thousands of products. Today, nickel is a critical component in lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles as well as in the steel used in many of these vehicles. Nickel is critical in the development of laptops and smart phones, jet and rocket engines, offshore installations and power generation, gas turbines, aerospace, marine and military uses. As of late it has been identified as a mineral of the future since it is a vital component of the energy transition process because it is a critical component for renewable energy technology and battery production. Thus, most analysists anticipate worldwide nickel consumption to grow requiring new market sources of nickel to be explored and developed. Deposits of commercially viable concentrations of nickel have been found in Northern Ontario, close to Atacama’s gold claims.

Diamonds

Canada has four diamond mines and is the third largest supplier of gem quality diamonds in the world. The USA has no diamond mines. Early exploration work on our diamond properties has turned up macro and micro diamonds – from samples close to the surface. The market demand for diamonds from North American sources is expected to grow – especially from the USA (the world’s largest market for diamonds).

Gold

Gold is a crucial asset to hold during economic, political and social uncertainty. It is also valued for jewelry and other applications where conductivity and non-corrosive material is essential. The demand for “cheap” gold is expected to rise. The cost of exploration and extraction where deep mining is required is becoming uneconomical for producers. New discoveries are rare. Atacama gold sites are near one of the world’s most successful producing gold mines. Our prospects for success in the gold business look very bright to us.

Graphite

New and exciting uses for this mineral are creating high market demands worldwide. Graphite has recently been categorized as a crucial strategic mineral by several governments including the United States and the European Union because it is used in energy related applications such as electric vehicles, Pebble Bed nuclear reactors, fuel cells, solar panels energy storage, photovoltaics and many electronics including smartphones and laptops. China is thought to produce 70% of the present global supply. They are now retaining 80% for their own use. North America needs 25 new graphite mines by 2020 to keep up with demand.
